Middlesbrough Named Wost Place To Live 2007 In Annual Channel 4 Property Poll

Property experts Phil Spencer and Kirstie Allsopp present the full list of the best and worst places to live in the UK in a special live show on Wednesday 17th October at 9pm on Channel 4.

Now the most talked about countdown on television, the programme unveils what?s hot and what?s not in the property market - based on the criteria of crime, environment, lifestyle, health, education and employment.

While last year?s controversial ?worst? place Hackney has improved enough to now be ranked 12th on the ?worst? list, Middlesbrough has finally been found to be the overall ?worst?, having previously been in 6th worst place last year and 5th worst place in 2005. And Hull makes a return to the list as the 2nd worst place to live, following it being declared the ?worst? place in 2005, but then improving enough to not even make the top 10 last year. And it?s not good news for London with 25% of the worst list being made up of London Local Authorities, while Scotland and Northern Ireland don?t feature at all.

We can exclusively reveal the 20 ?worst? places to live 2007 -

1: Middlesbrough ? North East (6th last year)
2: Hull ? Humberside
3: Newham - East London (4th last year)
4: Nottingham ? East Midlands (7th last year)
5: Merthyr Tydfil - South Wales (3rd last year)
6: North East Lincolnshire ? Eastern England
7: Islington - North London (5th last year)
8: Blaenau Gwent - South Wales (9th last year)
9: Mansfield ? East Midlands
10: Knowsley ? Merseyside
11: Blackpool ? North West
12: Hackney - East London (1ST last year)
13: Stoke-on-Trent ? Staffordshire
14: Barking & Dagenham ? East London
15: Doncaster ? South Yorkshire
16: Cannock Chase ? Staffordshire
17: Manchester - North West (10th last year)
18: Haringey ? North London
19: Burnley ? Lancashire
20: Hartlepool ? North East

The results of the ?best? list remain tightly under wraps, to be revealed live on Wednesday night.

This year, for the first time, viewers can have a say on the results of the poll. By going to www.channel4.com/4homes anyone can send in comments about where they live, and rate their region on the interactive ratings table and map.

On Wednesday night when the live show airs, the best comments may be read out by Phil and Kirstie, plus during the programme viewers can also text in their opinions on the poll results and areas featured.

Phil Spencer says: ?Each year we seem to create a storm of controversy with this survey, but it?s all based on official data and all we do is tell you the results. It?s always edge-of-the-seat stuff when it comes to revealing the best and worst, and this year won?t be any different?.

Kirstie Allsopp says: ?Announcing this year?s results live for the very first time will just add to the tension of finding out who has topped our poll. And what I want more than anything is to champion, not condemn, the places on the worst list as there are some real diamonds in the rough?.
